Highlighter: The Secret to Taking Your Makeup to the Next Level!

2025-07-01

Highlighter is the soul embellishment of makeup, which can subtly change the facial contour and luster. For different styles of makeup, the use of highlighter strategies is very particular.

European and American three-dimensional makeup: Goal: Extreme deep bone structure, emphasizing high points such as cheekbones, brow bones, and nose bridge. Highlighting skills: Choose powder or glitter highlights with a strong metallic feel (champagne gold, bronze gold, silver). Accurately point on the highest point of the cheekbones, brow arch (below the brow bone), the middle of the nose bridge (avoid the nose tip), the lip peak and the tip of the chin. The technique is bold and small. The C-shaped area is connected between the brow bone and the cheekbone to create a strong contrast between light and dark. Brighten the root of the nose to make the nose bridge more upright.

Korean water-light makeup: Goal: Full apple cheeks, healthy and translucent, non-aggressive soft water-light feeling. Highlighting skills: Prefer liquid or delicate cream highlights (pink tone, light champagne gold, fine glitter or polarized light). Apply lightly on the highest part of the apples (avoid the highest point of the cheekbones) and slightly on the triangle under the eyes. Lightly brighten the bridge of the nose and the chin. Just a light layer is needed on the brow bone. The core is the moist luster of "diffuse reflection", not obvious glitter. It can be patted with a wet puff or fingertips, as if the skin has its own light feeling.

Japanese sweet/transparent makeup: Goal: Soft and cute, natural vitality, and a sense of exquisiteness that seems to be there and not there. Highlighting skills: Prefer matte brightening or extremely fine pearlescent (off-white, light gold). Focus on brightening the tear grooves, nasolabial folds, forehead, and chin concave areas to smooth the face. Apply a small area of pearlescent on the highest part of the apples to reduce the luster. Apply a small amount of glitter on the eye head and the middle of the eyebag to increase the innocent feeling. The overall pursuit is a natural and fusion of swelling feeling, avoiding sharp lines and strong light.

Natural nude makeup/pseudo-bare makeup: Goal: Just like natural good skin, leaving only a low-key and healthy satin. Highlighting skills: Preferred creamy or liquid highlighters in off-white or skin-gold colors. A small amount can be blended into foundation or primer to apply to the entire face to enhance the translucency of the skin. Or a very small amount can be lightly applied to the bridge of the nose, the inside of the cheekbones (close to the apples of the cheekbones rather than the high points of the cheekbones), the lip peaks and below the brow bones. The key is to choose a natural brightening color, use a small amount and pat it thoroughly to achieve the effect of "you can't see that you are wearing makeup but your skin is in good condition."

Core general rules: Choose the right color tone: Choose pink/silver for cold skin, and gold/champagne for warm skin. Texture matching: Liquid/paste is more suitable for nude makeup; powder/glitter is used for strong light. Accurate position: Different styles require different positions to lighten up to shape the corresponding contours. Better less than more: A small amount of superposition is the golden rule to avoid becoming "oily" or "glitter face". Appropriate tools: Use a soft brush for powder, and use a beauty egg or fingertips to pat the paste and liquid evenly.

Master these differences and let Highlighter truly serve your makeup style and become the secret weapon for adding the finishing touch.
